In recognition of National Women’s Small Business Month in October, we shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions and diverse perspectives that women bring to the small business sector. The United States boasts over 11 million and counting women-owned small businesses, presenting abundant opportunities for involvement and support.

Throughout the month, various organizations, businesses, and aspiring entrepreneurs come together to share resources and guidance that empower women-owned businesses. When women own small businesses, the positive impact on communities is immeasurable. These locally-owned establishments generate revenue that directly benefits the area. Additionally, small businesses are more inclined to support local organizations, schools, and community projects. Moreover, they play a vital role in job creation, ensuring the continuous growth of local economies. By actively promoting women’s involvement in the small business sphere, we also foster a greater level of business diversity. Interestingly, approximately 50 percent of women small business owners represent women of color. Supporting women in small businesses has far-reaching effects, as it serves as an inspiration for young women. Witnessing fellow women succeed motivates them to pursue their own aspirations. It is worth noting that, in 2012, 44 percent of women small business owners were also responsible for raising children under the age of 18. By supporting women-owned businesses, we are also providing indirect support to families.

Since 2012, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has been actively involved in championing National Women’s Small Business Month. The SBA promotes various events and webinars that provide a platform for women business owners to share their stories and insights. Each year, the organization hosts a diverse range of events that celebrate and recognize the achievements of women in the small business arena.
