Sarasota Welcomes Hundreds of Athletes for 2023 Canoe Championships

Over 300 dedicated athletes gathered at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota for the 2023 ACA Sprint Canoe National Championships. The event was a testament to their hard work and year-long training, as expressed by Kaycee Maas, the communications coordinator of the American Canoe Association. Among the participants was Elena Wolgamot, who traveled all the way from Seattle, Washington, to take part in the thrilling races.

The championships not only celebrated the present but also offered a glimpse into the future for these athletes. With Women’s Sprint Canoe becoming an event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics now inspired them. Azusa Murphy, one of the participants, shared her excitement about being part of the second generation of female canoe athletes competing internationally, setting her sights on the prestigious Paris Games in the coming summer and beyond.

For many like Andreea Ghizila, the nationals served a greater purpose. As a relatively small sport, it was a chance to showcase their skills and grow the sport’s community. Younger girls were combined with experienced athletes, like Ghizila and Murphy, fostering camaraderie as they cheered and learned from each other’s races. Some of the top athletes from the championships would soon be heading to Germany in pursuit of their dreams to qualify for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
